No matter how tough you may look regularly, an eye patch is bound to make you look even tougher. This black fabric is synonymous with rogue, hard, and brute force for men and women alike. In this list, I’ve rounded up the 31 best characters with eye patches. Believe it or not, only a couple of them are pirates! To spice things up even more, I’ll count them down by toughness, because they are all tough as nails.
31. Claus Von Stauffenberg from Valkyrie, movie
Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg of the German army is one of the toughest there is! Well, he has to be, trying to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the wolf’s lair and all. Throughout the story, Von Stauffenberg exhibits nerves of steel as he keeps his dual identity as a loyal colonel and conspirator and overcomes the most stressful circumstances you can imagine. While serving as a staff officer in Tunisia, Von Stauffenberg lost his left eye and right hand in an Allied attack.
30. Carl Grimes from The Walking Dead, TV series
Yeah, I could have chosen The Governor for this list, but for obvious reasons, I like Carl better. And even Negan said Carl is a badass and that he has, and I quote: “giant man-size balls Carl lost his right eye when he was shot through the head. It was unclear at the time whether or not Carl would survive the horrible injury. Once he was well again, Carl started wearing a rag over his head at all times.
29. Ragetti From Pirates of the Caribbean, movie
A member of Captain Jack Sparrow’s crew, Ragetti is known for his wooden eye which he sometimes covers with an eye patch. He is quite superstitious and believes in ghosts and monsters. This leads him to be easily scared, which causes him to get on Jack’s nerves at times. Despite his fearfulness, Ragetti is a usually brave pirate who stands up to anyone who threatens his friends or crew mates. He is fiercely loyal to Jack Sparrow and will do anything to help him achieve his goals. He always hangs around with his partner in crime, Pintel.
28. Number Two from Austin Powers Trilogy
Number Two – or: “my cycloptic colleague“, as he was once referred to by Doctor Evil – is one of Doctor Evil’s main henchmen. His job is to help Doctor Evil to take over the world, but he tends to argue a lot with his boss, due to his monopolistic views. Number Two is a fine businessman and is frankly much better at it than Doctor Evil, who would rather plot unprofitable evil plans. While Doctor Evil was cryogenically frozen for thirty years, Number Two managed to turn Dr. Evil’s front company, Virtucon, into a multi-billion dollar organization. Although a nefarious villain, Number Two is not that tough and even cried a few times when Doctor Evil humiliated him.
27. Seamus from Family Guy, Animated series
For some reason, Cartoon characters with eye patches are rare, but here’s one of the best: Seamus is a tough fisherman who, for some reason, tends to emerge out of the shadows to warn Peter about possible dangers at sea. But he’s also got a deep, dark secret: he’s a Cylon, one of the robotic beings that have been at war with humanity for generations. Tigh is a complicated man, and it’s that complexity that makes him so fascinating to watch. He’s brave and loyal, but he’s also capable of great brutality. 17. Evil Morty from Rick and Morty
Although a version of the good-hearted Morty Smith, Evil Morty is notably immoral, ruthless, and displaying intelligence rivaling that of Rick. This is reflected by tricking and murdering dozens of Ricks across the multiverse and capturing, torturing, and enslaving hundreds of Mortys. Obviously, if you’re going after Rick Prime it means you must be tough as a nail. Evil Rick isn’t really missing an eye. His eyepatch is a transmitter he used to control “Evil Rick”!
16. The Deacon from Waterworld, movie
Played by Dennis Hopper, The Deacon is the leader of the Smokers, who believe The Deacon to be a messianic figure who will lead them to the mythical Dryland. Well, being the King of Asgard and the Allfather of the Gods, would make Odin the toughest guy on almost any list. However, since it’s easy to be a badass when you have Asgardian physiology, Cosmic Awareness, and Dark Magic, I will only give him the fifth spot on this list. However, Odin is a battle-hardened god, who has managed to conquer the Nine Realms and fought countless battles. He lost his eye in the Battle of Tonsberg with the Frost Giants and their leader Laufey.
4. U.S. Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn from True Grit, a 2010 movie
Well, I could easily have picked John Wayne’s version of Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn, but sue me – I like Jeff Bridges’ depiction of the character better. Cogburn is one of the most badass federal marshals in Arkansas, not to say the most ruthless. He is hired by a fourteen-year-old girl to go after outlaw Tom Chaney who has murdered her father. It is mentioned that Coburn lost his eye in a Civil War, but not much is known besides that.
3. Deathstroke from DC Comics
Deathstroke is one of the most feared and respected characters in the DC Universe. A master assassin and mercenary, he has been involved in some of the most high-profile missions and conflicts over the years. Real name Slade Wilson, Deathstroke is known for his ruthlessness, efficiency, and lack of remorse. He was once a member of an elite military unit known as the Suicide Squad and later worked as a bodyguard for Lex Luthor. It was during this time that he first encountered Batman, and the two have been bitter enemies ever since. Deathstroke is an incredibly skilled fighter, with peak human strength, speed, agility, and durability. In the comics, Deathstroke lost his eye when he was shot by the person who was closest to him –his wife Adeline! As a former Special Forces operator in World War III, Snake Plissken has been through a lot of tough situations. So, when it comes to toughness, Snake Plissken is up there, and therefore he takes the second spot in this list of 31 characters who wear eye patches.
1. Nick Fury from Avengers, movies
Fury is one of the most badass people in the MCU, and he doesn’t even need superhuman powers to do it. I mean, this guy went up against Loki with an infinity stone, with only his service pistol! That’s right, he told a god he could crush him like an ant! He took on all of the agents sent to go kill him by himself with one car that increasingly got closer to not functioning. As for the story of how Fury lost his eye – I would say that it is the most unique on this list. He lost it when Goose – an ordinary house cat – scratched him! However, Goose is a fierce alien creature that resembles an Earth cat. Anyway, for both his toughness and unique eye story, Nick Fury is my top pick for this list of 30 best characters with eye patches.
