2. Muromi-san the Mermaid from Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san

anime mermaid Muromi-san

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san is a Japanese anime television series that aired from 2013 to 2014. The story revolves around Muromi-san, a mermaid who is millions of years old (but looks 16 years old). From the moment she met Takuro she doesn’t stop harassing him on a daily basis. Takuro, an ordinary school kid, still manages to keep his cool despite the fact that there is a legendary creature pestering him. He keeps his cool even when Muromi-san brings mermaid friends. With the exception of other mermaids, the place is frequented by creatures from the mythological spectrum: Lioness, Yeti, Harpy, and a creature named Cowbata, the only male in the business.

Oddly enough, an anime with such impressive mermaids is a comedy series about almost nothing. During the episodes, the protagonists of the series discuss world affairs – civilization, religion and mythology, evolution and prehistory – but this is done completely casually, and here Muromi, is a mermaid who often gets herself into comical situations due to her inexperience with life on land.

3. Ponyo from Gake no Ue no Ponyo

anime mermaid ponyo

Ponyo is a young mermaid who falls in love with a human boy named Sosuke. She is determined to become human and live with him on land, even if it means giving up her life in the sea. Ponyo’s innocent and adventurous spirit is sure to win over your heart.

Ponyo is one of my favorite characters. I love her innocence and childlike wonder. She is always so excited about everything and her enthusiastic personality is contagious. Her relationship with her father, Fujimoto, is also very touching. Even though she is a mermaid and he is a human, they share a deep bond of love and understanding. Ponyo’s determination to become human to be with Sōsuke is also very admirable. Overall, Ponyo is just a wonderful character who brings joy and happiness wherever she goes.

4. Sun Seto the Mermaid from Seto no Hanayome (My Bride is a Mermaid)

anime mermaid Sun Sato

While swimming at the beach he finds himself drowning but is suddenly rescued by a beautiful mermaid. Just when he thought it was a dream, he is suddenly summoned to an undersea mansion where he is introduced to an underwater Yakuza gang. That is correct! A Yakuza gang who are mermaids. Okay well, apparently the Seto gang here have a code for when a mermaid exposes herself to a human they either need to kill her as punishment or kill Nagasumi and his family to protect their secrets, or force them into a relationship and get married.

The mermaid who exposed herself as Sun Seto is perfectly okay with this arrangement, but the rest of her gang, especially her father, would rather kill the boy because they’d rather die than have their precious baby girl handed off to a mere human.

San the mermaid is sweet and a bit clumsy like many other anime mermaids, but she has a
a trait that sets her apart, her sheer determination towards loyalty.
